Are You Doing Dry January?

All About Doing 30 Days Dry

With Christmas and the New Year celebrations approaching there tends to be a lot of alcohol consumption over these holidays so it's no surprise people love to do Dry January (aka 30 days dry) after to detox the body and mind.

How did Dry January start?

It began in 2012 as an initiative by Alcohol Change UK, a British charity, to “ditch the hangover, reduce the waistline and save some serious money by giving up alcohol for 31 days” and now millions of people now take part in the challenge all over the world thanks to social media.

The growing awareness comes as recent research have found no evidence that light drinking might help keep people healthy. Moreover researchers have also found that more than five drinks a week on average can take years off a person’s life.

Why is alcohol dangerous for you?

You probably think of drugs that have the highest risk of harming you when you think of the world's most dangerous drug. The majority of people believe that class A substances such as cocaine, crystal meth, and heroin are the most dangerous drugs that can destroy someone's life and cause severe health problems or even death. As a result, the reality is a bit more complicated since it depends on so many different factors.

Despite their highly addictive properties and devastating effects on society, none of those drugs rank among the top ten most dangerous drugs. According to a recent scientific study, alcohol is the most dangerous drug.

That a legal substance you can buy in a pub or supermarket is that dangerous is alarming to say the least. IFL Science reports that the results are based on several different factors. A former British government drug advisor, David Nutt, chose sixteen harmful factors and separated them based on the drugs' individual and direct effects on the user, as well as their impact on society and other people.

A direct effect of a substance on an individual person e.g. could be death by overdose. In contrast, HIV infection could indirectly cause damage if shared syringes were infected. It was considered the best way to find out which substances were the most harmful to put twenty substances through the procedure. However the fact still remains that alcohol is in fact the most dangerous substance we can consume.

Here are 10 reasons why alcohol is the world’s most dangerous drug:

  1. It can cause financial problems
A person who is addicted to alcohol will spend all their money on drinking, even if they cannot afford it and therefore cause them to drink more or act irrationally to others or themselves
  2. It can result in chronic health issues
Poor nutrition and alcohol go hand in hand, resulting in health conditions such as obesity, mineral deficiency and many more issues
  3. It can lead to early death
People who drink heavily have a high risk of developing heart and liver disease. Therefore by consuming too much alcohol in one setting can also result in alcohol poisoning and can lead to sudden death
  4. It can cause people to lose their inhibitions
People who drink a lot say and do things they usually wouldn't do and if they were sober, these actions or verbal conflict can ruin their career and reputation. They may also engage in high-risk activities such as unprotected sex, drug use or breaking the law
  5. It can result in permanent organ damage
Drinking alcohol can cause cirrhosis of the liver, which can lead to death
  6. It can cause congenital disabilities
Fatal alcohol syndrome can occur if a woman drinks while she is pregnant, which can result in brain damage, stunted growth, organ defects and more for the foetus
  7. It can increase aggression
Alcohol contributes to sexual and physical violence, such as rape and domestic abuse. It can make people's suppressed emotions come to the surface and the person can act out in violence due to this
  8. It can result in fatal accidents
People who drink can think that they are okay to drive even when they are not ok, which can end up in car crashes where they could injure, kill others or themselves
  9. It can be a gateway to other substances
People who abuse alcohol often want to try other drugs to see what that different ‘highs’ are like because the alcohol high is wearing off
  10. It can ruin a person’s life
Alcohol can destroy a person’s life, a family life and ruin friendships for all the reasons listed above and many more

What are the benefits of giving up booze for 30 days?

It may not seem for long but it does make the biggest difference.

Researchers have found and proven that regular drinkers who abstained from alcohol for just one month were found to have a “rapid decrease” in certain chemical messengers in the blood that are associated with cancer progression. The participants in this study also saw improvements in their insulin resistance, weight and blood pressure.

Almost three-quarters (71%) of people who took part in the Dry January challenge said they slept better and 67% had more energy, according to the University of Sussex study. More than half, 58%, lost weight and 54% reported better skin. People also feel better mentally and focus also improves.

Heavy and regular drinkers who do the 30 day challenge might also notice they have less heartburn and reflux, feel less irritable and anxious, and have fewer headaches.
