Digital Detoxing: The Path to a Clearer Mind

|

Question: how many times have you caught yourself mindlessly scrolling through your social media feed?

Or perhaps you've felt a pang of anxiety when you can't find your phone? If this sounds like you, then it's time we talk about digital detoxing.

What is Digital Detoxing?

Digital detoxing is all about taking a break from our digital devices to reset and recharge our minds. It's like a spa day but for our brains! Digital detoxing can help reduce stress, improve sleep, and even enhance our relationships. AND...if even considering it makes you slightly nervous it's an indication that it would likely be a really good idea. I don't remember who said this, but I think about it often: 'everyone should meditate for 15 minutes a day. Unless they don't have enough time, in which case they should meditate for 30 minutes a day.'

Similarly, everyone should do a digital detox for a day. Unless they REALLY don't want to, and then they should do it for 2 days!

The Science Behind the Need for a Digital Detox

According to a study published in the journal Computers in Human Behavior, excessive smartphone use can negatively affect our health and well-being, performance, and social interactions. Another study published in PubMed Central found that digital detox interventions significantly improved self-control, performance, and well-being. So...phone use affects us negatively, BUT...we can also benefit hugely from limiting our time on them. These studies serve as a compelling call to action for anyone looking to enhance their quality of life, which should be all of us!

Why should I do a digital detox?

  1. Mental well-being: Constant exposure to digital devices can lead to information overload and increased stress levels. Taking a break from technology allows your cortisol levels to drop and your mind to rest and recharge.
  2. Improved sleep: The blue light emitted by screens can disrupt your sleep patterns. By disconnecting from technology, you can improve the quality of your sleep and wake up feeling refreshed.
  3. Increased productivity: Digital distractions can hinder your ability to focus and get things done. By taking a break from technology, you can regain your focus and be more productive in your daily tasks.
  4. Stronger relationships: Spending too much time on digital devices can take away from face-to-face interactions with loved ones. Disconnecting from technology allows you to be fully present and engage in meaningful conversations and activities.

How to do a digital detox?

  1. Set boundaries: Start by setting specific time limits for using your devices. Designate certain hours of the day as "tech-free" time. In our house we have loosely decided that Sunday should be tech free and we stick to it as much as possible. I have found it really amazing to recognise how often I want to turn to my device during that time, and the weirdly subtle relief I feel when I remember I 'can't'. We don't realise the pressure our own connectedness comes with a lot of the time.
  2. Find alternative activities: Fill your time with activities that don't involve screens, such as reading a book, going for a walk, or practising a hobby. Yes, I know you think you don't have time for those things...it's because screens are a major time suck. Cut them out for even a little bit and you'll probably be quite shocked by how much time you actually have on your hands.
  3. Create a support system: Encourage your friends and family to join you in your digital detox. Having a support system can make the process easier and more enjoyable.
  4. Reflect on your experience: Take the time to reflect on how the digital detox has impacted your life. Notice any positive changes in your mood, productivity, and relationships. When we pay attention to the things working well we tend to want to repeat them.

Conclusion

A digital detox can have numerous benefits for your mental well-being, sleep quality, productivity, and relationships. By disconnecting from technology, you can create a healthier balance between the digital world and the real world. So, why not give it a try? Your mind and body will thank you!
